The waterfront suburbs of Warners Bay and Speers Point sit at the northern end of the lake, a few minutes’ drive or a short walk away from each other.
Come here to while away hours enjoying relaxed lakeside dining, following the waterfront bike and walking path, discovering public art along the foreshore and exploring a sprawling park with an awesome playground, plenty of shaded lawns and a cutting-edge arts pavilion.
Settle in for lunch at one of the cafés lining The Esplanade shore drive at Warners Bay before relaxing at Warners Bay Foreshore Reserve with a treat from one of the ice-cream parlours on the strip.
Then feel the breeze coming off the lake as you walk or ride along the Warners Bay Foreshore Shared Pathway. Follow this tree-lined lakefront pathway towards Belmont to venture over the water on the elevated Red Bluff Boardwalk at nearby Eleebana. Or head the other way from Warners Bay to the recreational hub of Speers Point, keeping a lookout for the intriguing Creative Lake sculptures dotted along the shoreline.
If you’re visiting with kids, watch their eyes light up when they see the tall climbing tower leading to a sky-high slide, the water-play area and extensive cycling circuit, to name a few of the amazing facilities, at the Lake Macquarie Variety Playground in Speers Point Park.
Speers Point Park regularly hosts markets, concerts, open-air cinema nights and other exciting events. Wander down to the public jetty or stretch out on the grass and gaze out at the sailboats from the waterside lawns (check the Lake Macquarie Sailing Calendar for dates of sailing competitions hosted by Speers Point Amateur Sailing Club). And be stirred by the permanent contemporary artworks and visiting exhibitions at the park’s Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima.
In warm weather, refresh with a dip at Speers Point Swim Centre, which has an Olympic-sized pool, wading pool and wet-play area for toddlers. And if the rainclouds roll in, drive a few blocks inland from the Warners Bay foreshore to the Hillsborough Road entertainment precinct. Here you’ll find boredom-busters like ten-pin bowling, dodgem cars, an inflatable playground, rock climbing and ice-skating.
