More to Love in Lake Macquarie

With 174 kilometres of lake foreshore, 32 kilometres of stunning coastline and a vast bush hinterland, it can be hard to know where to start when planning your Lake Macquarie holiday. Here are just some of the things you can do on and around the lake.

Go fishing at Swansea, where the lake meets the ocean, learn to surf at Blacksmiths Beach, head down the coastline to see the famous sea caves at Caves Beach, step back in time at the beachside former mining village of Catherine Hill Bay, and hike or bike through the coastal heathland of Wallarah National Park.

Set course for the sailing hub of Belmont, on the eastern shore of the lake, to wine and dine with the boating community at a sailing club or play a round of golf by the beach. Charter a yacht to sail around the lake, swim at the netted Belmont Baths, walk or cycle Belmont’s Green Point Foreshore Reserve or the epic Fernleigh Track, and explore Belmont Wetlands State Park on foot, by bike or in a 4WD. Head to nearby Lake Macquarie Airport to take a helicopter joy flight, experience tight turns in a specialist aerobatic aircraft, or jump out of a plane on a tandem sky-dive.

Feed the family at the Warners Bay dining precinct before entertaining the kids at Speers Point Park’s award-winning Lake Macquarie Variety Playground. Expand your horizons as you follow the Creative Lake Sculpture Trail on the shared pathway from Warners Bay to Speers Point, spotting the public art on your way to the striking Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima in Speers Point Park, then visit the galleries and sculpture park of the Museum of Arts and Culture yapang, across the bridge at Booragul.

Stock up on supplies in Charlestown, the retail centre of the city, before tackling the hiking and mountain biking trails of nearby Glenrock State Conservation Area or plunging into the ocean at Redhead Beach or Nine Mile Beach, which joins Blacksmiths Beach near Swansea.

Pop into Toronto, the largest town on the western side of the lake, for a waterfront meal, walk, ride or scoot your way around the former RAAF seaplane base at Rathmines, and marvel at graceful Dobell House, the former home and studio of renowned Australian artist Sir William Dobell, at Wangi Wangi.

Base yourself in Morisset for easy access to the southern end of Lake Macquarie as well as the bushwalking trails and abseiling sites of Watagans National Park and the renowned Awaba Mountain Bike Park west of the M1 Motorway.
